Surpasses Understanding eBook Vicki Talmage
A tragic story that impacted my life as well, albeit in a much smaller way. I didn't know Vicki but I did know she survived the horrific murder and suicide by her father, Henry Gardner Talmage in September 1977. I knew her father and knew he was crazy. In the fall of 1974, my wife and I rented a house from Talmage on 10th Avenue that he owned (he had converted the garage area to a downstairs apartment which was rented to two law students at the time). All was normal for about 2 years and we enjoyed living there and had very little contact with Talmage. His son Steven did show up a couple of times to watch my wife's canaries. He was a very nice young boy about 12 years old and enjoyed just sitting and watching the canaries. In the fall of 1976, a series of encounters with Talmage began. They would begin rather normally but then suddenly his behaviour would change, his face would become ashen in appearance and he would start arguing irrationally. One time he thought that the bushes in front of the house had mites and he blamed us, claiming that the mites had come from the pet canaries inside and had infested the landscaping outside. There were 4 or 5 crazy encounters that fall and winter in 1976. We decided he was going "off his rocker" so we bought a house in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake and moved out in the spring of 1977.
When we moved out, we made it a point to clean the house spotless, take pictures, and have two of our friends verify and witness the condition when we returned the keys to Talmage at the house. I don't remember what happened but, as had become usual at that time, Talmage went into a rampage about something or other. I went outside with my friend Jamie and as we were leaving, he pushed my wife against the wall in the entry way, yelling in her face. She brushed away his arms and ran outside. Talmage slammed the door shut trapping our friend Margaret inside. He pushed her against the wall and she yelled in her proper Scottish accent, "Get your hands off me!" He backed off and she ran out. We left.
We were glad to be done with him. He was crazy. But, he wasn't finished with us yet. He showed up at my boss's office wanting to get me fired from my job at the U. of Utah Medical Center. My boss was the chairman of the department and told Talmage, "I know all about you. Now get out of my office and leave the building." Talmage went into one of his rages and demanded to know who his boss was. Now he want both me and the department chairman fired!! My boss responded, "The president of the university and God, in that order. Not get out!" Talmage responded that he knew the president of the university (David Gardner. Talmage's mother was a Gardner, distantly related to the president).
Well, he did go to somebody in the president's office and they referred it to the Dean of the Medical School. He now claimed that my wife and I had been using viruses from our work in the Medical Center to infect canaries that my wife raised in the house we had rented from him and he was now convinced that the house was now contaminated with viruses and he wouldn't be able to rent it. To make a long story less long, the Dean wrote a letter to Talmage saying that he had investigated the matter thoroughly and was convinced that it was not possible to infect canaries with any of the viruses used in any research program in the university and that it would have been impossible for us to have used canaries for any research related to the university.
Less than 6 months later, Talmage murdered his wife and sons and committed suicide. We were all shocked. We knew he was crazy; we just didn't know how crazy he really was. We were thankful afterwards that we had not been among his victims.
Vicki was/is a brave soul for surviving and telling her story. I understand -- it Surpasses Understanding.

Surpasses Understanding eBook Vicki Talmage Reviews
The beginning of this book is a beautifully written example of a "betrayal bond", with all it's seductive manipulation and unhealthy boundaries, being played out in real life. I have deep admiration for the author's determination to not only survive, but thrive.
Vicki Talmage gave me her book in exchange for an honest review.
I have not read much in the True Crime or Memoir genres for a long time but I enjoy reading them. It’s been two days since I finished reading Surpasses Understanding and it is still haunting me. Vicki Talmage is amazing. She suffered a life of abuse, as did her whole family, at the hands of a brutal father. As I read each chapter I couldn’t help but put myself into Vicki’s shoes. I’ve had friends over the years who have been abused emotionally, physically and psychologically. I wonder how they stay strong and seemingly move on. I wondered to myself how Vicki stayed strong. How she never gave up. How angels were watching over her.
This story is heart-warming, tragic, sad, scary, and redemptive. To think that all your hopes and dreams shatter after finding the one you love instead of having a wonderful life with your family. For a child to have promises broken time and again. To watch your siblings and your mother beaten. And to sometimes take the brunt for them so they wouldn’t have to be hurt.
My hope as a reader is that this book will go out and touch everyone who has lived a life of abuse and give them courage to get away instead of having a tragic ending like Vicki did. Vicki repeatedly called cops and asked for help and no one believed them. If you hear of abuse happening report it.
Thank you for writing this book Vicki. May your strength lend wings to others to face the living demons in their lives.
5 Stars I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I had to keep going until I was finished. When I finished I felt very emotional. The characters felt like my best friends. It was so real I felt like I was a character in the novel. I will directly purchase this book in some format.
Unbelievable Vicki. I have thought about September 12, 1977, for many, many years. This book has enlightened me, and taught me so much.
I went to High School with Vicki although I was a year ahead of her. I had no idea any of this happened as I had moved from SLC by then. She is an amazing person to have survived all she has gone through. She must be the strongest person ever to have risen above and succeeded as she has. Bravo to her. I wish I still lived in SLC so I could hear her talk and be inspired. A must read.
Amazing story of faith, love and survival.
This was an awesome, true story of the events leading up to and through a horrific tragedy. A story of trials, broken trusts, complete inner peace and forgiveness. I would highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with difficult circumstances. Vicki's life then and now are inspiring.
I went to elementary school with Vicki and I remember that Vicki and I were good friends. I remember times spent at her house, playing with her brothers and I remember her father. He seemed friendly but awfully controlling, much like my own father used to be. I ran into Vicki again as a teenager working at a restaurant in Salt Lake City. It wasn't until I had left Utah completely that I heard about the tragedy.
Anyone who is able to move through the incredible trauma and pain of such a tragic experience is a true winner. I've had my own traumas to deal with so I understand how difficult and painful they can be. I just ordered the book and will spend the next few days reading. It takes great spiritual strength and courage to heal. I remember how much I admired Vicki as a kid. I can only imagine the incredible person she has become. I look forward with hope to reconnecting with the awesome individual she has become at some future point.
